about
"You're A Man," a b-side off of Big Bliss' "Vital Return."
Wallace: "I think Tim once called this our 'winkiest' song and that’s really the perfect way to describe it. While trying to come up with a vocal melody, Tim just started jokingly singing 'you’re a man, congratulations, such decent being, with education.'
The two of us wrote the rest of the lyrics separately and then put it all together (which is where the call and response comes in). The song is deeply sarcastic but if any men are actually offended, they’re the ones we wrote it for. To all the men who came to the foot of the stage to approve my use of pedals, this Buds for you."
Tim: "My intent with my 'character' in the song was to embody a particularly defensive, entitled man becoming more and more flustered in response to Wallace’s deadpan sarcasm. I will say that I, in part, am representing a punched-up version of behavior and attitude I’ve noticed even in a younger version of myself. Hopefully that guy stays in the past."
lyrics
You’re a man
Congratulations
Such decent being
With education
You’re a man (my due will be arriving)
With expectations (a matter of time)
Rose tinted glasses (I am relevant and modern)
Your good intentions (I know I’m doing right)
Hey you, hey you, I notice
The truth, the truth, I loathe it
You’re a man
Congratulations
I pay attention
When you ask questions
You’re a man (and here is how I see it)
With explanations (what about the other side?)
They don’t see them (I said that I was sorry)
Your good intentions (I have nothing left to hide)
Hey you, hey you, I notice
The truth, the truth, I loathe it
(The reaches of my pain
The hill that I must climb
I am relevant and modern
In the space I occupy
which I’ve given up to you
See what I’ve given up for you?)
You’re a man
In conversation
With yourself and (I’m only getting started)
My remaining patience (please don’t walk away)
Oh you, oh you
So wounded
The truth, truth
We’ve noticed
I love this record so much! I will sometimes listen to it multiple times in a week or even multiple times in the day. The whole feel of the records is so great! Billy Power
